One of the many reasons I never liked watching sports is that the act of being a spectator always makes me want to play rather than be cooped up, sitting in the bleachers. Conversely, I develop the same urge when I watch live theatre – with the difference being that I’m reasonably good at theatre and I would get dismembered if I attempted any sport. So you can imagine how amped up I felt watching Witch Hunt Theatre’s immersive and site-specific production of Tracy Letts’ Bug.

Shakespeare in the park is a time-honored tradition among English Lit nerds, parents dragging teenagers to see “something cultured,” and theatre-makers alike. The factors that stop audiences dead in their tracks from going to are 1.) it’s Shakespeare and 2.) there’s always a chance that it could be BAD Shakespeare. (We all have some idea, or flashback, as to how bad BAD Shakespeare can truly be.) Thankfully for all, Theatre@First’s fails to disappoint and their production of ‘The Tempest’ casts a spell over its audience.

As much as I love a period piece, I’ve found my fondness for them tainted due to the current administration’s efforts to place Victorian-style restrictions upon inalienable human rights. So, I was fully dreading a night full of corsets and bell skirts. To my relief, I walked into the theater and found the stage set with a faux rustic conference table, tricked out with rolling chairs, and above, a floating screen flashing disparate numbers. I sighed a deep breath of relief reminiscent of the first vape hit at the start of the play. I remained curious as to how the meaning of the playwright’s words would be changed when placed out of the context he originally intended.

Many great conversations happen at a table, over the course of a meal, when thoughts are shared and hearts are bared. The ritual of devouring sustenance and drinking in words can be deeply human. Harbor Stage Company’s My Dinner With Andre endeavors to serve a slice of life, but the meat and potatoes are far too small a portion and leave the audience famished.

The time has come when Julius Caesar sadly becomes relevant again. This year, it’s more dangerously relevant than ever. Political violence, tyrannical rule, socioeconomic gaps, and more exist in both today’s headlines and Shakespeare’s 426-year-old play. Some theater companies shy away from this script during the post-election season for this very reason, others embrace it. I’m thankful that Deadword Theatre Company, a rising gem in the Boston theater scene, has so boldly staged one of the theatrical cannon’s most spitfire plays.

The audience walks into the house, filled with incongruous electronic audio, to find a blank stage except for a leather chair adorned with notebooks, two podiums pushed upstage, and a constantly looming giant white semi-circle screen at the center. It’s a disarming and almost chilling effect that promises its audience a unique and singular theatrical experience.

Apollinaire’s ‘Hedda Gabler’ is Sublime

Hedda Gabler’ – Written by Henrik Ibsen. Directed by Danielle Fauteux Jacques. Stage Management by Kaleb Perez-Albuerne; Costume Design by Elizabeth Rocha; Scenic and Sound Design by Joseph Lark-Riley; Lighting Design by Danielle Fauteux Jacques. Presented by Apollinaire Theatre Company at Chelsea Theatre Works, at 189 Winnisimmet St, Chelsea, MA. through March 16th

By Charlotte Snow

“One cannot always be mistress of her thoughts.”  Hedda Gabler slyly confides to her aunt-in-law, who counters with, “That is the way of the world.” In that exchange, the play seems to unite all its core questions at once. “What is the source of our suffering and vices?” “Is it written in the stars or in the unwritten rules of society?” “Are we our own internal darkness?” “Or is it a separate entity latched onto us that must be ignored, cut out, or tamed?” Only a moment is needed for Apollinaire Theatre Company to establish that this play will be a thought-provokingly moody masterpiece, even if it will take a few scenes before the plot’s mystery to develop (and unravel).

Whether we like to admit it or not, being surrounded by theater people is a special kind of Hell. We’re overly extroverted, overly annoying, overly… everything! So when I saw that Yorick Ensemble was producing The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, a musical that is self-aware about musicals being a plague to humanity, I was jazzed as a chorus boy’s hands. Despite being about musical theatre and its culture, this show has never made it to Broadway. Although it’s famous, it’s YouTube famous.

Can times really be that ‘unprecedented’ when more and more different kinds of ‘unprecedented’ actions and events appear time and time again? It’s a question that I have been asking myself repeatedly with the turning of the new year (and admittedly with the overturning of the old administration). It’s been far too easy for all of the negative thoughts about the world and one’s place in it to form a snowball of anxiety that grows in speed and size as it hurtles downward.
