The classic musical 42nd Street is set in 1933 NYC, when The Great Depression has drained people’s bank accounts and dampened their spirits, and where the bright lights of The Great White Way have dimmed. Producers and co-writers Bert Barry and Maggie Jones and director Julian Marsh are desperate for their new show Pretty Lady to be a hit. They’ve infused the show with comedic bits, big musical numbers, and sexual innuendo that should pack houses, and assembled a sensational cast. Jones knows that tapping dancers are crowd pleasers, and that taking her gaggle of chorus girls out to lunch makes for happier hoofers. Marsh, a brusque and hard-driving taskmaster, rallies his actors “to work and sweat and work some more,” and “dance ‘til your feet fall off” and in five weeks, “it’ll be the best damn show this town’s ever seen.”

42nd Street – Music by Harry Warren; Lyrics by Al Dubin; Book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble; Directed by Brian Boruta; Music Direction by James Murphy; Musical Restaging and New Choreography by Lara Finn Banister; Scenic Design by Benjamin D. Rush; Lighting Design by Seifallah Sailotto-Cristobal; Sound Design by Elizabeth Havenor; Costume Design by Brian Simons, Properties Design by Sarajane Morse Mullins; Stage Managed by Michael Lacey. Presented by Umbrella Stage Company, 40 Stow St, Concord, MA through Oct 20th

With its stereotyped characters, dated dialogue, and thin plot, 42nd Street may not be representative of the bold, daring, innovative programming thatConcord’s Umbrella Stage Company promises to deliver (and has successfully shared with audiences for years). What is definitely daring, though, isproducing artistic director Brian Boruta’s decision to produce a show of this scale and complexity in a new facility that’s still unfamiliar and where the paint is  barely dry. Bravo to Boruta (also the show’s director) and company for making this bold move, as the 21-member cast (yup, that’s 42 dancing feet) succeeds in proving that 42nd Street is a fitting opener for the Umbrella Stage Company’s inaugural season.

Go and Meet Those Dancing Feet – Ogunquit’s ’42nd Street’ is a Gem

From its wildly energetic opening number to the big finale featuring the title song, the Ogunquit production of 42nd Street is everything you’d want from a BIG summer musical. Killer dance routines with an army of glitzily costumed hoofers, one of the genre’s best known and loved scores performed with verve by a deep and talented cast, a megawatt Broadway star (Rachel York) at the top of her game, and a storyline as light as the cotton candy at a traveling carnival.

Welcome back to 1933 and the wonderful world of tapping feet in “42nd Street” at North Shore Music Theatre with a huge cast of 30 performers. It is loosely based on the 1933 movie musical with the same name which starred Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell. The stage musical version opened on August 25, 1980 and ran until January 8, 1989, won the Tony Award for Best Musical. It starred Jerry Orbach as Julian Marsh and Tammy Grimes as Dorothy Brock and I was fortunate enough to catch that musical back in 1980. “42nd Street” is the tale of up and coming chorus girl, Peggy Sawyer who arrives in New York seeking a career on Broadway.
